Leopold Lodge 1760

Scarborough’s Largest Masonic Lodge

The Leopold Lodge was formed in 1878 and named after Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, the youngest son of Queen Victoria, who was a very avid Freemason.

Ours is a vibrant, welcoming Lodge where there is always something happening. It is the largest Lodge in Scarborough and our members come from a diverse range of careers, backgrounds, faiths and age groups. We pride ourselves on welcoming many new brothers every year and consider our lodge to be at the forefront of masonic engagement with our local community.

We have formal meetings every month with a meal afterwards, when funds are raised for local charities and a good time had by members and visitors alike. We have a monthly ‘Lodge of Instruction’ where we develop our masonic knowledge and there are also social events where partners and non-masons are very welcome to attend.

If you would like to find out more about us and what we do, and maybe join us, we would be delighted to hear from you.

What happens at a meeting of Leopold Lodge?

Our formal meetings involve wearing special garments and ritual. Our ritual, as with so much in Freemasonry, is rich with symbolism, allegory and metaphor, all designed to enable us to focus on our own improvement.

The specific ritual depends on what’s happening on the night. We could be initiating a new brother as an Entered Apprentice, passing a brother to the Second Degree as a Fellowcraft Freemason, raising a brother to the Third Degree as a Master Mason, or installing our new Worshipful Master for the year ahead. These are all unforgettable events for the brother at the heart of the ceremony.

Some brothers act as officers, having specific roles in the ritual. The roles, like the ritual, are rich with meaning and significance to our development as good men. These officers are said to be ‘on the ladder’ and will progress through the ranks until they get to be the master of the lodge, should they wish to do so.

After the formal ceremony is the Festive Board. A meal, which is a social event and an opportunity to get to know visiting brother masons, raise money for charity and have a great evening!
